What should I expect in my 45 minute Music Together® demo class?
A Music Together® demo class is 45 minutes of music and movement led by a certified Music Together® instructor. Activities will be both sitting and standing, songs can be with or without words, and some songs will be supported with props play. Other activities will isolate different rhythm and tonal patterns. Music Together® classes are designed as an informal learning environment which means children are encouraged to participate the way they want with little to no intervention from the grownups. However, grownups are expected to fully engage with all the activities and be models for their children in finding joy through singing, dancing, and playing in class.
What if my child is distracted and doesn't want to sit still?
Music Together® is a researched based program that supports an informal learning environment. Research shows that brain development for children under the age of 5 are primed to learn and grow in every environment and the best way to support their growth is allow them to learn about their bodies at their own pace. Whether they are sitting in the parent's lap or exploring the corner of the room, the children are still learning. They still see and hear everything going on in the room and their brains are being exposed to a rich musical experience regardless whether they are sitting still or moving around.
I am not musical and I feel embarrassed singing in front of other people. Do I really have to sing?
All the songs are in English but I can't speak English. I also am concerned that my child won't be able to understand either.
Music Together® is a music program not an English program. There is no requirement to speak or understand English in order to participate in Music Together®. In addition, research shows that young children's brain develop rhythm, tone, and language separately. Based on this research, songs in Music Together® are designed to sometimes focus only on rhythm, sometimes only on tone, and sometimes specifically without English, which we call "Songs Without Words". Music Together® purposefully includes several "Songs Without Words" in every collection because we want to focus only on rhythm or tone without the distraction of language. Also, teachers are encouraged to sing the songs substituting in the native language so that families can learn how to have fun singing the songs using the language they are most comfortable with.
My child is 2 years old and I am looking for a class with children around the same age. Are there age specific classes?
Music Together® Family classes are designed to be mixed age classes with children ages 0-5. As an informal learning environment, not only are children encouraged to engage and participate at their own pace, we know that children learn from watching and observing other people. Older children are provided an environment to practice leadership by helping the teacher and the little ones. Younger children receive help from the older kids and also learn by following the example of the older children. And grownups can also see the progression of music development in the other children in the group, from younger to older, and find support and encouragement as their own child develops musically. And most importantly, Music Together® is a parent-child focused class. Although there will be children of various ages in the group the biggest takeaway from each class in the purposeful engagement between the grown-up and child.
